Hevre,
Over the last few weeks, there has been lots of press (Jewish and general) about the discussions on the Committee of Jewish Law and Standards of the Conservative Movement about status of gay and lesbians in Judaism.
This is an important issue that deals with real people, but lately it has broken down into a discussion about CJLS and Rabbinical Assembly (organization of Conservative Rabbis) procedures.
I am involved as a member of the Rabbinical Assembly and of Keshet Rabbis (an organization of Conservative Rabbis which I have written about before).
The details of the procedural disagreements are important but often ignore the pain experienced by LGBT Jews in the Conservative Movement.
To learn more about the discussion in the Movement, the Jewish legal concepts involved, and the procedural issues at the RA, check out a web forum hosted by my colleague (in both the RA and Hillel), Rabbi Ken Cohen of American University.
I will be attending the RA annual meeting in Mexico City from Sunday evening until Thursday night. I had intended to propose a resolution on social responsible investing to the organization. That will probably not happen while the current discussion plays out.
I will most likely only report back after I return next Friday.
Meanwhile, enjoy break.
Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Bruce
